Cannabis dispensary to locate in former Aldi in Galesburg – Monmouth Daily Review Atlas


GALESBURG — Milan-based Nature’s Treatment of Illinois has purchased the old Aldi building with the intent to bring a recreational cannabis dispensary to Galesburg.

According to a news release Monday morning from the Knox County Area Partnership for Economic Development, NTI has purchased the former grocery store at West Main and North Henderson streets with the intent to subdivide the store.

At least two of those smaller retail stores within the building will be a coffee shop and, if approved by Galesburg City Council next Tuesday, a recreational cannabis dispensary.

Legal marijuana sales begin Jan. 1 in the Land of Lincoln for adults 21 and older. Galesburg Planning and Zoning Commission gave its approval to where legal cannabis businesses could operate throughout Galesburg and that matter is before Galesburg council Sept. 3.

NTI plans to create more than 25 new jobs in Galesburg, and the business would also “generate significant tax revenue for the City of Galesburg in the coming years,” the news release said.

Ken Springer, KCAPED’s president, said that currently existing medical dispensary license holders are the only entities who can seek a recreational cannabis business license. The two closest medical dispensaries are in Milan and Canton.

“The play for the community has been you either get one of those initial license holders and get one now or wait,” Springer said. “We thought it made more sense to get in on the ground floor to get an adult-use dispensary.”

As far as the vacant Aldi getting new life, Springer said he is “very happy.”

“We’ve had sporadic interest in that site. The challenge is it’s a big building. It’s 14,000 square feet. Your typical storefront-type retail would usually occupy 2,500 square feet or less, which makes a building that size much too large,” he said.
