(WKOW) — Tuesday night, the city council in South Beloit, Illinois cleared the way for a new marijuana dispensary.
That’s raising some concern in Beloit, Wisconsin.
The two cities are across the state border from each other and the dispensary would be built right along I-90.
The mayor of South Beloit says the business will bring a new economic opportunity to their city.
But across the border, Beloit’s police chief says the dispensary could become a gateway to illegal activity.
“One of the biggest issues is that folks in Illinois not realizing that once you cross the state line, that is illegal conduct. Or people in Wisconsin recognizing that going over and purchasing it and bringing it back is illegal conduct,” said Beloit Police Chief David Zibolski.
The developer of the dispensary says the business is expected to be up and running in February of next year.
