New Hampshire will get its fifth dispensary for medical marijuana Saturday when the non-profit Sanctuary ATC opens a facility in Conway.

Sanctuary, which runs a dispensary in Plymouth, just received its final approval from the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. It plans to open to clients, not the general public, on Saturday, July 6, at 11 a.m. It is located in a former Citizens Bank building in a strip mall at 234 White Mountain Highway.

The new dispensary is the result of a 2018 law passed by the state legislature designed to make it easier for people in the north county and western parts of the state to get therapeutic cannabis. The law approved a new dispensary in the North Country, called Region 4, as well as Cheshire and Sullivan counties, called Region 3. The state says a Region 3 dispensary is “in development.”

A representative of Sanctuary told the Conway Daily Sun that there are a little over 2,000 patients in Zone 4 who have a card from a physician saying they have ailments which make them eligible to buy medical cannabis. She anticipated that over 200 people would become patients in Conway.

The state’s Therapeutic Cannabis Program began in 2016. At the end of 2018, according to state figures, 7,120 qualifying patients and 449 medical professionals willing to sign cannabis cards were participating in the program.

Qualifying patients registered with Sanctuary in Plymouth will be able to use the Conway dispensary without registering separately.

Dispensaries also exist in Lebanon, Dover and Merrimack, operated by two for-profit companies.
