KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The first recreational sales of marijuana products in Kalamazoo Township will begin this week through the dispensary KKIND.
Previously, KKIND was opened last summer as a medical dispensary. At that time, KKIND Chief Operating Officer and co-owner John Taylor was unsure of whether or not the business would sell recreational products.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it, probably more than likely we will go recreational,” Taylor had said in an interview with WKZO. “I think that’s where all the businesses are going, but we certainly have a medical focus on our dispensary.
Following the opening of the medical facility, Kalamazoo Township voted to opt in to recreational sales, doing so ahead of the city itself.
Becoming a recreational business in the Township also makes KKIND the first business to sell recreational products in Kalamazoo County.
The City of Kalamazoo itself is continuing to opt out of recreational businesses and has until June 1st to create a local ordinance.
City officials voted in favor of opting out until a further notice last fall. They have since released the first draft of the proposed ordinance, which is available for the public to view.
Officials have also scheduled a series of meetings to receive public input on the matter.
Recreational sales will begin at KKIND at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 13. KKIND is located at 521 E. Mosel Ave. in Kalamazoo Township.
The news of the recreational township sales also comes as a Kalamazoo dispensary is suing the city over allegations of lost profits due to the opt out.
