SPRING VALLEY, CA — Authorities Friday publicly identified a man who was shot and killed by an unknown assailant this week at an illegal Spring Valley cannabis dispensary.
Deputies responding to reports of gunfire found 37-year-old Jerome Francois Turley of San Diego mortally wounded in a parking lot at the unlicensed marijuana business in the 9100 block of Olive Drive shortly after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to sheriff’s officials.
Paramedics took Turley to a trauma center, where he was pronounced dead Wednesday morning, Lt. Thomas Seiver said.
No description of the shooter has been made public.
As a child, Turley played youth football alongside former NFL running back — and Helix High School alumnus — Reggie Bush.
Bush posted a tribute to Turley on Instagram Wednesday night.
“Jerome Turley was like a brother to me,” Bush wrote. “I can truly say he brought joy to my life …. (his death) has left a lot of people including me confused and in disbelief.”
The victim’s cousin, Ty Brown, told the San Diego Union-Tribune that Turley worked construction, and for the last 15 years was one of the primary caregivers for a cousin with mental disabilities.
“Jerome was harmless and he would never hurt anybody,” Bush wrote. “He was a good person period.”
