Medical Marijuana Dispensary on Route 22 Endorsed by Council –

SCOTCH PLAINS – The Scotch Plains Township Council unanimously endorsed an application from the Chillin’ Out coffee and smoke shop on Route 22 that is seeking to become the first local dispensary for medical marijuana.

Chillin’ Out owner Dan Jacobs needs approval from the Township in order to be able to apply for a license from the State of New Jersey, which hopes to expand the number of authorized dispensaries in the state.

“It’s a difficult application process, but we are going to take a shot at it,” said Dan Jacobs, who said the cost of the license is $20,000.

“I support medical marijuana and Chillin’ Out’s application … and providing a location in Scotch Plains,” said Mayor Al Smith, who added that he is against the New Jersey sales tax on medical marijuana since the state does not tax any other medications.

Recreational use of marijuana is not legal in New Jersey following a failed attempt to legalize it earlier this year.
