New ‘cannabus’ tour explores Ann Arbor’s dispensaries, marijuana history –

ANN ARBOR, MI — A new “cannabus” tour is providing an opportunity to explore Ann Arbor’s history and dispensaries through a marijuana tour of the city.

MaryJane Tours, which launched on July 11, is a bus tour of the marijuana industry in Ann Arbor. During the tour, participants visit a growing house and a dispensary, as well as learn about how the industry has changed in the city and its ties to social activism.

The tour is a partnership between Bus A Move, a party bus company owned in part by Anthony Richmond, and Farm Assist Wellness, a farm-to-table-style dispensary that provides plants for people to grow at home.

The tour starts at Apothecare, where tour participants learn about different products and receive swag bags with a variety of products, including CBD and vaping paraphernalia, as well as dispensary coupons.

After boarding the MaryJane Tour bus, the group then goes to the University of Michigan’s Diag for a discussion about the history of the marijuana industry in Ann Arbor.

Anthony Freed, owner of Farm Assist Wellness and co-creator of MaryJane Tours, said he talks about Hash Bash and John Sinclair, an activist who best known for being sentenced to 10 years in prison for possessing two joints. He spent just two years in prison — from 1969 to 1971 — after his sentence was overturned by the Michigan Supreme Court.

“I explain how the Hash Bash is actually a protest,” said Freed, adding that a student group from the university requests a permit for the event each year. “…It’s kind of a solemn moment because it reminds people how lucky we are to be standing there on a cannabis tour [without repercussion].”

Teaching people about the history of marijuana activism is an important part of the tour, Freed said.
