SOUTH BELOIT (WREX) — The city of South Beloit gives the green light Wednesday to bring a cannabis dispensary to the city.
The Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved a recommendation to city council Wednesday night to approve a cannabis dispensary from developer Dyn Commercial Holdings.
City council must approve the recommendation for the cannabis dispensary to become a reality at 7000 First Ranger Drive, South Beloit, just off I-90.
The location would mean the dispensary would be among the first businesses drivers see headed south into Illinois from Wisconsin.
The full council is expected to vote on the measure at its meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24, according to city attorney Aaron Szeto.
The city has also decided to tax the sale of cannabis at 3 percent. When the law passed, municipalities who decided to allow the sale of marijuana were given permission to tax it up to 3 percent.
“I’m predicting that there is a greater benefit to this community in terms of economic gain, revenue, then the down side,” South Beloit Mayor Ted Rehl said on Aug. 28, 2019.
Starting Jan. 1, 2020 Illinoians 21 and over will be able to buy recreational marijuana.
