MARLBOROUGH — A third marijuana dispensary is coming to Marlborough.
City councilors on Monday approved Local Roots New England Inc.’s special permit request to open an adult-use marijuana dispensary on Rte. 20. Local Roots will join Garden Remedies and Vedi Naturals as marijuana dispensaries in the city.
The new dispensary will open at 910 Boston Post Road East, which company officials have called an ideal location because of ample parking, lack of residential neighbors and a traffic signal in front of the shop. City councilors have said the traffic light will ease any potential congestion in the area.
Local Roots’ neighbors at the new dispensary are mostly commercial, so there will be minimal effect on residents. The facility has 32 dedicated parking spaces for Local Roots, four more than required. However, once nearby commercial businesses close in the afternoon, there will be 95 parking spaces available. A significant portion of the company’s expected business will occur in the evenings and on weekends when the commercial businesses are closed.
The site is also within the city’s recreational and medical marijuana regulated zone – which on Rte. 20 extends from the Sudbury line to Phelps Street on the east side and from the Northborough line to Interstate 495 on the west side.
Customers entering the dispensary will have to be buzzed in and will then enter a vestibule where their IDs will be checked. The facility will feature a state-of-the-art camera system and 885 square feet of retail space.
The company is no stranger to MetroWest. Local Roots is building a manufacturing and cultivation facility on Tripp Street in Framingham. Another manufacturing and cultivation facility is in operation in Barre.
Local Roots operates a dispensary in Fitchburg and plans to open another in Sturbridge early next year.
