Warwick medical marijuana dispensary sold to Chicago company – The Providence Journal

WARWICK — The Summit Medical Compassion Center, one of only three medical marijuana dispensaries in Rhode Island, has reportedly been sold to a Chicago-based company with marijuana interests across the country.

Green Thumb Industries Inc. announced in a statement Monday that it had acquired Mobley Pain Management and Wellness Center (DE) LLC and Canwell Processing LLC, both of which hold ownership interests in Summit.

“Entry into the Rhode Island cannabis market further strengthens Green Thumb’s position on the East Coast, a region that has embraced the freedom for adults 21 [and over] to choose cannabis,” Ben Kovler, Green Thumb’s founder and chief executive officer, said in the statement.

Steve Harrington, the principal owner of Canwell, said, “The expanded reach of Green Thumb’s quality branded products and extraordinary retail experience is a big win for the state of Rhode Island and its patients.”

The acquisition comes as Rhode Island is planning for six additional medical marijuana dispensaries and lawmakers are expected to renew discussions this fall on legalizing recreational use of the drug.
