CANTON Zen Leaf, one of two medical cannabis dispensaries in the city, has started the lengthy process of moving.
The dispensary at 1851 Steinway Boulevard SE is owned by Mother Knows Best and does business as Zen Leaf — a brand of multi-state cannabis company Verano Holdings. It operates alongside cultivation and processing facilities separately licensed by Mother Grows Best under the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program.
Representatives who want to move the dispensary portion to 3224 Cleveland Ave. NW made their case last week before the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals. Canton’s codified ordinances require cannabis facilities to obtain a conditional use permit from the board.
“Allowing us to relocate to the Cleveland Avenue site would give us an advantage from a business perspective,” said Anthony Marsico, of Verano Holdings.
He described the Stein Industrial Park as “not really fit for retail.” Marsico said the move would put Zen Leaf in one of the city’s “top retail corridors” while providing the plaza with a long-term tenant.
DeVille Developments submitted the application on behalf of Zen Leaf but did not have a representative at the board meeting. The company owns the plaza and has a lease agreement with Zen Leaf, DeVille’s director of leasing Patrick Sirpilla said afterward.
“They were looking to get into more of a retail area,” he said.
Because of technical issues, two board members who called into the meeting were unable to vote. The majority present approved the conditional use permit with John Lucas Jr. and Steve Lamiell voting in favor and Kathleen Tatarsky voting against.
